About 4 weeks ago I noticed that my 8 yo gelding had what I thought was a bite of some sort on his back up near his loin area. Didn't think too much about it until it did not go away. Started out as a nickel sized round bump sort of reaction but now has flattened and spread into an oval shape with several little pointed red/brown scabby type nodules along the perimeter; no hair loss. The skin/hair area within the oval shape is normal. What could this be??

I am afraid nodules with the hair remaining has a very long list of possibilities. For important differentiating characteristics see Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors.

I have a horse with a large Nodular Necrobiosis on his back that has granulated into a large (small palm sized) bump. It is starting to cause a problem with his riding...he is a show horse. My vet has injected it with steroids and nothing happened. Do you have any treatments that are non-evasive? Is there any NEW treatments that will not risk foundering him?

Thanks!

I have had a biopsy...it is large. The vet calls it Eosinophilic Granuloma w/ Collegen Degeneration... also known as NN...

Corticosteroid therapy is usually effective and safe. Occasionally it will fail and surgery required. Do you know the dosage and type of corticosteroid used?

I believe the type was depo?? (is that right?) and we only injected once time. Is there anything else "new" coming along such as freezing small sections? DMSO? etc.

Not that I have seen ivan, following the failure of Depo, surgery is considered the standard and has a very good prognosis. However you should check our protocol for NN in Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors to see be sure it has been followed.
