HI, My 5 year old Rocky Mountain horse has torn his Medial Collateral Ligament of the coffin joint. He is now in his 11th week of stall rest and we are up to 35 minutes of hand walking. I have injured my sholder in handling him, and now have my trainer working with him on the ground - i.e. hand walking, backing, disengaging the hind quarters, etc. What in particular should we stay away from in terms of movement at this point? Any success in healing of this type of injury in horses that are just turned out at this point in a small, level, dry paddock for short periods of time?

The devil is in the details Lynn and how badly torn/damaged the ligament is. Exercise too early and chronic desmitis with permanant lameness can result. In general these injuries are very sensitive to turning at any speed and stall rest very important. No one has put toegether a retrospective on even a small numbers of tears in this ligament to accurately prognose from. There has been a recently presented retrospective on inflammation of the ligament and for sprains and strains the prognosis is only fair and stall rest seemed to be the key to getting them well. DrO

Dear Dr O, Our 12yo 15.3 TB mare has just been MRI scan on left hoof. She has 2 bone cysts just under the collateral ligament. Tildren is licensed for use in the U.K. (I found this info on your site!) Our UK Vet is happy to proceed with both close & peripheral systemic injections. This followed by box rest as you advise. He says he's not happy to operate or drill into the cysts as it's 'hit or miss' basically. What are your views? Many thanks, Norma Abel

Welcome Norma, I am a bit confused as I cannot figure what this has to do with a torn collateral ligament? This might be better posted under Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Joint, Bone, Ligament Diseases » OCD and DOD in Horses beginning a new discussion. The button for this will be at the bottom of the OCD page under the preexisting discussion. Is there a torn ligament involved? Other important information that will be needed is the location and character of the cysts. When you say "under the collateral ligament" is this in the bone and if so which parts. Or are these articular cysts deep to the collateral ligament? DrO
