We had not seen a recent report of this world wide problem in growing foals of Austrailia so thought we would stick it in as a reminder to our many Austrailian and New Zealand members who raise foals. Despite many published papers recently about this diesease it still seems to be a poorly recognized disease. We have also updated related articles to contain links to help you recognize this problem: Aust Vet J. 2004 Dec;82(12):750-2. Lawsonia intracellularis proliferative enteropathy in a weanling foal in Australia. McClintock SA, Collins AM. New South Wales Agriculture, Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, PMB 8, Camden New South Wales 2570. A 6-month-old Quarter Horse weanling filly was presented with lethargy, weight loss, inappetance, mild diarrhoea, marked ventral oedema and severe panhypoproteinaemia. Serum antibody titres for Lawsonia intracellularis were very high but PCR to detect faecal shedding of the organism was negative. Proliferative enteropathy due to L. intracellularis infection was diagnosed. After treatment for 4 weeks with oral erythromycin and rifampicin the filly made a complete recovery.
