DrO,

my gelding is showing classic signs of rain rot on his rump area.

I have read your article on the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. It has been extremely cold in my area and I hate to remove the scabs and expose bare skin to the cold. Also, bathing or using any type of wet treatment is out of the question in this weather.

I read where several members had good results using tinactin. I am assuming I would still have to remove the scabs to use this product.

Should I wait for warmer weather to treat this condition?

Hi I would not wait as it could get worse. You could use a spray bottle mixed with nolvasan 1/4 to 3/4 water or there are lots of comercial made products for rain rot that can help keep it under control till you can bath him. In winter I spray with the Nolvasan solution and rub in. It helps my horse. He only gets it on the rump in winter which is easy to control.

I agree with Katrina, wait and it may just get worse. I don't think a spray is likely to cause much harm because of the cold.

Thanks Katrina and DrO,

I did a more thorough check last nite and noticed several spots on his back as well. I want these to heal up right away so I can ride when the weather breaks.

I will treat right away. Thanks again.
