Hi All, A new eight month old filly has arrived at the same boarding facility where I keep my horses. She has been put into the quarantine section. She has the same symptoms that I have read about here on the Advisor for strangles; fever, green mucus in her eyes and nose and her lymph node abcessed and burst. A vet was out and later said that the test for strangles came back negative and that it was some other bacterial infection. My questions are 1)what other bacterial infection could this be? 2)can a strangles test give a false negative and 3)if it is strangles would a booster for strangles help my horses? Anyone who has had experience with this sort of thing I would appreciate your advise, I have never faced this issue before. Thanks Sandy

Sandra, what tests were run there are two ways to test for strangles: culture and PCR (antigen detection). If he ran a culture he should be able to id the organism. Culturing and accurate identification can be problematic in some circumstances, certainly false negatives occur. Vaccination in the face of possible exposure and vaccine reactions are discussed in the article, Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi. DrO
