A horse at my barn was diagnosed with strangles. Based on all the evidence, we are pretty sure his symptoms started about 11 days ago and was probably exposed to it about 3 1/2 weeks ago when he visited another ranch (the only time he left our barn). My horse has been in close contact with this horse, in fact traveled with him to the ranch in question, but has no symptoms. Both horses are vaccinated. My question is this. Once the infected horse has been isolated, and I wait for 12 days (incubation period) and my horse shows no signs of infection, is my horse restricted to our barn until the infected horse's symptoms are gone for 30 days? I have several group trail rides planned and need to know if I should cancel them. When is is safe for my horse to make contact with other horses? Thanks.

2 weeks to be fairly safe, 3 weeks to be extra safe. But there are never any guanatees as the organism can persist a long time in the guttural pouches of some horses, see the article for more on this. DrO
