Hello-
1. I was wondering if anyone had any recent experience with now called Evitex on their cushings horse?

2. Does anyone know why the name changed and is there any new research on it outside of what emerald botanicals has found?

Besides the name change Mandy, is there any change in formulation? I do not know of anything new on the use of vitex in horses but this was really interesting:

Parasitol Res. 2005 Jan 29;
Extract of the seeds of the plant Vitex agnus castus proven to be highly efficacious as a repellent against ticks, fleas, mosquitoes and biting flies.

Mehlhorn H, Schmahl G, Schmidt J.

Department of Cytology, Zoomorphology and Parasitology, Heinrich-Heine-University , Dusseldorf, Germany, mehlhorn@uni-duesseldorf.de.

About 70 plant extracts were tested for their ability to repel the attacks of blood-sucking arthropods. It was found that a CO(2) extract of the seeds of the Mediterranean plant Vitex agnus castus (monk's pepper) can be used as a spray to keep away especially Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from animals and humans for at least 6 h. In addition mosquitoes, biting flies and fleas are also repelled for about 6 h.

We've used it for a few years on two of our Cushing horses. Decreased urination and water consumption (they were consuming twice as much as the others) was obvious after only one week on the E-Vitex (Hormonize) and neither have foundered again since we started them on it.
I believe they changed the name because many people thought the previous name indicated that it contained hormones.

The ingredient list of Evitex:

1. Purified Water
2. Vitex Agnus-Castus
3. Propionic and Acetic Acid

Sorry but I don't know if the ingredient list changed from what it was before. Donalds reason for changing the name sounds very likely.

That was very interesting information about the bug repellant properties. It is not surprising as sour as it smells. I wonder if it may have effect on internal parasites also?

Donald-did you find the hair coat on your cushings horses to normalize a bit once taking Evitex?

Thanks for the information.

They both shed out last summer but their summer coat was still longer than normal. They are Arabians so the previous shaggy Shetland type winter coat they had was VERY unusual for them. This winter the gelding's coat looks almost normal except in a few patches on his stomach and chest but the mare has a very curly coat about 2" but not the 4 to 6" length she had the prior to starting the E-vitex.
