I have a healthy 17 year old Paint horse who, after I haltered him in the pasture today, just fell over on his side! He was only down a couple of seconds. Upon getting up, he seemed a little dazed, but then I walked him around and he seemed okay. When we stopped he fell asleep. I observed him for a couple of hours after this and only noted he seemed lethargic, but not overly so. Can anyone tell me what may have caused this? Has this happened to anyone else? It was very strange.

Thank you for any input!

JP without a complete exam that includes evaluation of the hearts rhythm and sound characteristics we can only guess at the many possibilities. How long have you owned this horse and have you ever had anything similar happen. Have you read the article on Narcolepsy associated with this forum that are similarities in your post to some forms.

Dr. O, thank you for your reply. I have owned this horse for 8 years. He is very healthly, never experiencing any illness, problems, etc., including falling over. He is lightly worked 3-4 times a week. I did read the article on Narcolepsy, but since this was a one-time event I didn't know how applicable it was to my situation. Would you recommend a call to my vet? I was thinking of continuing my usual routine with him, and watching for unusual signs. I just don't want him to fall over while I'm on. Thank you.

JP,

From you posting this seems to be a singular event. Did you check out the immediate area where your horse fell to see if there was a hole, a rock or something that may have caused him to fall? Might he have simply slipped? Sometimes (according to the theory of Akum's Razor) the simplest reasons are the cause of the unknown. I do hope this was a one-time event and your horse shows no other similar symptoms.

I think if the horse is back 100% there is not likely to be much the vet would find and just watch seems reasonable to me.
