In TB forums, its believed that close inbreeding can cause infertility (3sx4d), but there are many TBs bred that close that don't seem to have a problem. Is this a wives tale or can inbreeding cause infertility? Also, if a stallion, that is closely inbred and has low fertility (50% based on mares bred) is bred is this likely to be continued in his sons? The Stallion is professionally managed and has been extensively tested, yet they have not been able to determine any medical cause or even pattern to his infertility. Some have pointed to the inbreeding, but I don't see it mentioned/discussed in your forum. Thanks Kami

I think you are on the right track, it isnt the inbreeding that is causing the problem with fertility, its the individual that they chose for this program. He was a poor speciman with a fertility problem, which he is passing along to his get. Many breeding problems are passed along by choosing poor specimans, like crytporchids, etc. The old time breeders culled and culled even though they used a lot of line bred or inbred horses, especially in the beginning of the AQH. they had large herds back then , so they culled severely and only used the very best specimans to continue breeding with.

This particular horse has a very good pedigree of horses that raced well. He himself reached the higher levels of racing. His statistics for producing quality racing horses is also among the highest out there. So he isn't from low quality stock, nor could he be called low quality and he's consistently produced high quality off spring. There are not issues there. He just has always had a low conception rate where his sire (and none of his sire line) had this problem. Just trying to figure out if the inbreeding is the source. I can see why nature would program in such a thing, but can't find any 'credible' source that also says inbreeding is a source of infertility.

3X4 inbreeding would not be the problem. It is just the luck of the draw with that particular horse. Could have had a fever, or injury or who knows what that caused the lower fertility. It happens all the time. Use the horse wisely if it has fertility problems. Some horses can only be bred once a day. If bred twice or 3 times they just can't get the job done as far as impregnating mares. EO
