I have a friend with a very nice 4 year old warmblood mare that was just diagnosed with kissing spine after extensive bioscans, x-rays, you name it. I have never heard of this. What is the cause? Is it genetic or environmental? What is the general prognosis, and does this affect her value as a performance horse or broodmare? What types of treatments are available? The vet that did the bioscans has a wonderful reputation, but when I heard he recommended acupuncture and shock therapy. Does this stuff really work over the long haul? Sounds expensive and somewhat futile, but my mind is open at this point. Some brief history: She was barely started under saddle before showing huge problems resisting work, rearing and bucking when asked to move forward and blowing up when asked to accept a gentle half halt. She has been brought along very slowly, walk trot and hacking only with a couple of canter sessions at age 4, so overwork is not the problem. This is an extremely well bred and wonderful horse, so we are looking for answers.

Debbie, because of our limited amount of time to help our members we ask that members avoid posting their friend's problems. Of course we realize often that these problems raise questions in our members minds so let me direct you to relevant information. You will find a discussion of this condition, also called "dorsal spinous process impingment", in the article associated with this forum along with a discussion on treatment options including accupuncture. I have not seen any work on shock wave for this but at the very least it may be pallative, for more on both of these treatments see, Equine Diseases » Lameness » Treatment Methods DrO

As this is a horse that I broke in and trained over the summer, I suppose I feel it is "my" problem to help her fix it! I will check the article you mentioned. Thank you.
