Horse in my barn caught his nostril on something and literally ripped his muzzle/nose apart. Miraculously, our vet was able to stitch it back together yesterday. He is on antibiotics for ten days. Two questions; 1. How is it best to treat a sutured wound? Should we clean it or flush with water and put topical of some kind on there or just leave it alone. 2. Is there anything we can do to help prevent the itching that is likely to occur after about 5 days. We are very concerned that he will rub and rip out the sutures. We considered putting a grazing muzzle on him, but that might rub and cause more damage. Also might there be an appropriate anti-itch topical we could use. Any suggestions are appreciated?

Dana you should follow the instructions given to you by the vet who examined the wound. Most of these concerns never materialize and as you suggest there is very little you can do to protect the muzzle's stitches. The most important thing in my opinion is keeping a very clean water bucket. When he dunks his muzzle to drink if the water is dirty the wound becomes contaminated. DrOO

Yikes!!! I just saw this! Around 3/15 a horse at one of our barns ripped HIS nostril apart! He was being turned out into his paddock after AM feed and whirled around to receive his "cookie" at the exact moment that the she was tossing the gait chain around the fence post and the totally blunt hook at the end of the chain went right in his nose. Had he flung his head up and run, it would have been fine. But nooooo not Spunky! He flung his head DOWN, so the Totally blunt hook, on the vinyl chain went farther up the outside of his nostril, he panicked, threw his nose down to the ground and spun around with a yank that pulled the entire outer rim of his nostril loose. The vet was having a tremendously horrific day and couldn't get here for hours. When she did, the tissue was dehydrated and shrunk, so she removed it and stitched it and stitched it and stitched it some more. Stitches were removed on 3/25 I think, and the repair looks great and recovery was trouble free! "Only Spunky", we said.......apparently, we were wrong. HANG ON TO YOUR HORSES' NOSTRILS.....things usually happen in threes!!!!
