and two of the horses in my barn have not been vaccinated...Kicking myself in the bum for not requiring it ... I've read your article and it says to take the temperature every other day for a week, and if no temperature then it's ok to vaccinate the horses that have not been vaccinated yet...am I reading this correctly? I have told these two owners that their horses are to remain quarantined on my property until this is resolved down the street. Is it ok for the other horses who have been vaccinated to go on trail rides or can they bring it back and infect the horses that are not vaccinated?

And would you also be kicking yourself if you had a severe reaction to a vaccine that is about 60% effective for a disease that is easily treated? I think your questions are answered clearly in the article Aileen. DrO

A feed store that many of us visit had the strangles, and she spent $5k in vet bills. Hence the kicking.

Geez I took care of a herd of 30 horses with strangles one time and I don't think my bill was that much Aileen. And besides if your horses come down with it you know they are easily treated with cheap old procaine penicillin. Treated as such the course of the disease will be less than the typical sore neck you get from the injectable vaccine. DrO

Yes, I learned that with early diagnoses strangles is minimal from your article. I guess I am being neurotic again because I have 4 neurotic boarders right now and they're driving me crazy. All of what I heard about the $$$ is hearsay. I'm off to a meeting to get the facts on the issue in my neighborhood.

I know how that is, there is nothing like a diagnosis of "Strangles" in the neighborhood to drive some folks even crazier than they might normally be. This alone has driven me to vaccinate some barns for Strangles. I felt like I was protecting the owners sanity more than helping the horses. I am just glad we have the IN product to use so I don't see those sore necks anymore. DrO
