I have a 10 year old quarter horse that I put in dressage training 2 weeks ago who shows no lameness. I had chiropractor check him to make sure his back was ok. To my surprise the Dr said he is having hock pain and that his pelvis in out because he might be compensating. He wants to inject the hocks after xrays and then adjust him. that seemed extreme to me so I started analyzing the situation. My horse drags a back toe at the trot occasionally and my other vet thinks he has a locking stiffle and wants to do surgery.I am at a complete loss. Is all this related? I have read other postings and articles and am afraid of doing surgery, it's so permanent if there's a problem. He has always dragged the toe a bit, maybe 3 or 4 times in an hour riding. It has not gotten worse. Do I treat hocks or stiffle and what is the most conservative and the most beneficial treatment of each. Thank you for your answer.

Hello Tricia, Certainly a horse can drag its toe in response to hock pain but there should also a limp. They can drag because of stifle fixation but there should be a pause and jerk. Also a toe drag can be because of poor trimming and shoeing and many horses drag a toe just because they have a lazy gait. I don't know if his assessment is true or not but he certainly seems not to have convinced you. Before taking such radical steps I would get a second opinion if you feel his thoughts extreme. DrO

Dr Oglesby, I had a second opinion from my regular vet and found out that my horse has no hock problems(stress tested) only a mild stiffle lock and, just as you said, a shoeing problem(new shoer). I trusted my own instincts and was right not to take one Dr's opinion. This is a great service. Thank you for your help.
