I have an emotional 7 year old appendix who was in my paddock (about 1/2 the size of a rodeo arena) while I rode my other horse within his sight. (I will never do it again) Anyway the appendix went crazy, running as fast as he could back and forth, doing sharp, slidding turns, bucking in midair, etc. His halter got very muddy so I'm uncertain if he fell also. Of course he is now lame but he shows no problem with his feet or any particular leg. He does show sound at a walk, off at the trot going left (footfall is uncoordinated and unveven) and headbobbing lame at the canter doing a skip like motion, switching leads front and back, cross cantering. His back is medicum sore in the loin area when palpated. I tried bute, but didn't seem to help. The "incident" happened 5 days ago and I have a vet appt. next week, but was wondering if anyone has any input or experience of this nature. He is the only sound horse I have owned in the last 10 years. It is making me crazy! Thanks for any help. I have read a lot of the site info on lameness, but could not find anything like this!

Hello Jo, The above information does not lead us to a probable diagnosis or even which leg may be lame. Start with the article Equine Diseases » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse. Using the information see if you can find the leg that is then where in the leg there is a problem. DrO

Thanks, Dr. O. I did read that article and several others, but he did not show any positive symptoms for a particular leg lameness. He just seems to "skip" when trying to canter. However, after I began palpating him all over his back and hips, I noticed he was sore in many places and he is now getting better. Still don't know what he did, but I think there is no serious damage......just scared Mom. JO
