Dr O. My mare was diagnosed with Bog Spavin today and she has hard swellings on the outside of each hock which appear to be fused with the area on the inside of the hock. The lump moves when the inside of the hock is manipulated. She is not lame and I have been advised to put her on a quality joint supplement to minimise further joint damage. I've been reading through your articles and am confused by the terms 'bone spavin' and 'bog spavin'. Is there a difference?

I think I would be confused to because your description does not sound like bog spavin to me. There is a big difference between the 2:
1) bog s. is a chronically distended joint capsule
2) bone s. is arthritis of the joint
The article does a good job of describing the 2 but perhaps a picture to localize the appearances would help. See References » Equine Illustrations » Leg Anatomy and Conformation » Hock: anatomy and intrarticular injections
