Dear Dr.O, horse of friend has been diagnosed with "leaking valve". Seems to be feeling well, not depressed, eating well, but losing condition. I've already e-mailed her several articles from your site about methods of diagnosis. She is definitely going for second opinion. But: anything about treatment, if diagnosis is confirmed?

Hello Els,
Els,we avoid doing 2nd hand recommendations for many reasons but I can address your general questions on mitral insufficiency.

The prognosis and treatment for mitral insufficiency will depend on it's degree and cause. Degree can vary from non-clinical (does not cause any problems) to severely exercise limiting and congestive heart failure. Causes can be congenital, inflammatory, infectious, traumatic, and rupture of the chords. Until the degree of insufficiency and specific lesions are further characterised I would not recommend any specific therapy.
