My filly had abdominal surgery, 2 times within 12 hours apart; After returning home, she experienced many colic episodes but did well. She developed a hernia in the area of the cut. My vet said it should heal by self, to give him a call between 5-8 months. If it doesn't he says he can stitch it here at the farm. It has healed a little bit but not closed. I do not want to do the surgery while it is sooo cold, want to wait a little longer, would rather wait to heal self but don't think possible with putting her back into training for racing. No one on her back yet and do not want to put anyone on until the hernia is either repaired and/or healed. My question: Should I go ahead and get the surgery done to stitch the hernia or wait? thanks

I'll say one thing about the cold: It can help to keep the bacteria count down.

I thought about that also. I do have heat lamps in my stalls, high up and watch them carefully. Her stall is changed twice daily and she has run of a small area in front of barn with access to a larger area when conditions are right that she can't over do her exercising. However, I was unsure of whether to wait till the 14 degree temp lets up some what. My vet is coming next month to do her teeth and to look at her, I will probably know more then. Appreciate your response. thanks

Hello OandT, Much depends on the particulars of your hernia: If the current hernia posses a risk of rupture or bowel entrapment it should be repaired quickly. If on the other hand the tissues used for repair are still recovering from the last surgery, this is an indication for waiting. Often you have these two competing problems and have to weigh the risk and benefits to decide. DrO

Dr. Cleveland said to wait and it probably would heal itself. It has healed about 1/16 of an inch on the left side. He said wasn't big enough to cause rupture or bowel entrapment. Said he could stitch it if needed by time start training again. Surgeon said same. I thought would have been stitched between 5-8 months; however, I would rather it heal self but awfully slow seems like. He also advised me not to put anyone on her till healed or stitched but could do vertical, lateral bends, exercises to build abdominal muscles, leg stretching, basic non strenuous stuff. I am watching her closely. She is still sore in the area of the hernia on the right just above it somewhat. She has gotten the reach of her left hind back but not on the right. He is due next month for shots and dental exam, so will know more then. Thank you so much for the information. I will let you know what occurs after his visit
