Hello,
I have a 4 yr old mare (TB-Percheron cross). She is ridden very lightly and is is showing no signs of back pain. A few month ago she started a funny behavior when I curry her back: She stretches out both her front and back legs, as if she wants to pee but even more. Then she just holds that position until I'm done currying her. She has a nice muscular back and she is not moving away from the brush. She also stretches like a cat once a day or so (puts her frontlegs forward and presses her hind-end back). I am just curious if anyone has a horse acting this way (a draft cross or otherwise)?

Several of my horses (mares) do the "cat stretch" when they first wake up, or after their afternoon nap. All horses (I think) will flatten out their backs when you touch certain areas near their croup (towards their hind end) but I don't know for sure if that is what you are seeing with your mare. Is this new behavior for her?

Hi, thanks Sara. It is new behavior and she stretches out in an unusual way. But I read something yesterday that makes me think that perhaps sometimes she is sore because of her cycle. I've had geldings before..

Mares are a whole different "ball game!" Some are really affected by their heat cycles. I'd be curious if the behavior continues.

Charlotta - Often in the mornings when I go out to feed my mare stretches out like a cat. Sort of like getting the kinks out of her joints. She has always done that - actually makes me feel good to see her stretching.

If her cycle gives problems you have a good chance that when spring really arrives and she cycles better her problems get less or disappear.
If not and you feel like it HAS something to do with her cycle the vet can check her for you.
