Dear Dr. O. I am looking for some information regarding a tendon injury to the upper hind leg of a horse. This horse happened to get cornered in a shelter, and was kicked by another horse. The horse was very lame, and xrays showed that the tendon had completely torn away from the bone. The vet ordered 6 weeks of complete stall rest; the horse was then reassessed for another 6 weeks of stall rest. It is my understanding that with such an injury, there is a fine line between excercize and re-injury. I also understand that healing could take well into a full year. Some of the riders at the barn where this horse is are getting anxious to ride him, and don't understand the severity of the injury. It's not my horse, but we board our own horse there at the same barn, and while we are not veterinarians, we don't want to see anyone think that because the horse is being walked, that this means it will be a short time before it can be ridden. What are your thoughts on this? The veterinarian attending the horse was quite clear on his stall rest orders, however, it seems that the horse is enjoying a daily walk right now. Thanks for any information you can pass along regarding this injury. Sue.

Hello Susan CS. My thoughts are that they should respect the examining veterinarians prescription for exercise. Your post really does not give us enough information to assess the injury (which tendon? which bone?) but we will presume the examining veterinarian has made a accurate assessment of the problem. DrO
