My mare's colt, born April 21, 2005 has had diarrhea for 7 days. He is not dehydrated and is very alert and active. My concern is that my mare has contracted an upper respiratory infection, with a fever that started 5 days ago. The vet saw her on day 1 and I was directed to give her 5cc Banamine IV 2x day to control her fever instead of Bute (less caustic). I am a first time breeder - so this is all quite new to me. I have read that the foal heat diarrhea normally doesn’t last for more than 7 days - but his shows no signs of letting up. On my vets recommendation, I started him on probiotics and Gastrogard yesterday - my vet did not recommend an anti-diarrhea treatment. He does not have a fever - but could the meds she is getting be prolonging his diarrhea?

The Banamine is very unlikely to be causing diarrhea in the foal Beth and some foal heat diarrheas last longer than 7 days. I think our recommendations are more logical for foal heat diarrhea than those you list, if treatment is felt to be necessary. Assuming you do not give anything that might upset the foals digestive tract, whatever you do chances are very good this will soon pass. DrO

Beth we use pepto bismol or however you spell it on our foal just to make sure the tummy is a happy. As long as your foal is otherwise healthy its no big deal and passes in a few days. I put baby oil on the babys butt so the diarhea doesn't stick. I had one last for almost 2 weeks but because the foal was healthy otherwise I just stuck with the pepto.

Dear Cheryl and DrO - Thank you so much for the reply. I am happy to report that he appears to be better today. I guess I am just a nervous first time breeder...
