Discussion on Tendon injury and lost shoe... | |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 5, 2008 - 9:25 pm: 14 months ago my horse suffered a tendon injury - 'RF flexer tendon sheath effusing with synovitis. DDF strain proximal to fetlock. DDF medial marginal tear at level of P1B extending to P2A along medial lobe margin. Intersesmoidean strain with periosteal reachon (?) along lateral PSB cortex.' She had approx. 9 months of stall rest with hand walking, after that time start walk riding and gradually increase, with full turnout 3 months later (but at a gradual pace). Well we haven't ridden her because she was green when we got her and I'm sure what she did know is gone. Finally my question, the vet that treated her said to put shoes on her, either aluminum egg bar with rolled toe or wide web aluminum with rolled toe, branches should externd under heel bulbs. Breakover should be .5 -3/4 in front of plumb lined DrOpped from coronary band at dorsal aspect. Well she has been wearing her shoes, and today she pulled one, it is the one that is on leg that suffered the injury. Okay, really now my question, I can't get the farrier here this week, can she go out? I could pull the other shoe myself. The farrier will be able to come on the 15 of this month. She is really still not on 'full' turn out but spends about 5 hours a day out. My farrier feels she should no longer be wearing the shoes and should just have her front feet squared to help with the break over. The vet that originally saw her has moved out of state and the new vet seems hesitant to change her treatment. I personally would love to stop with the shoes since they are pretty pricey. I do put smb's on her when she goes out....but I also do not want her to reinjure herself again. So any insight you could give after this long drawn out posting would be appreciated. |

You do give an excellent description of the initial injury but it is an odd fact that horses appear to have a wide range of abilities to heal injured tendons. I know you would like more but our best advice would be to follow what your veterinarian advises you to do. DrO |

The odd thing is, that she hasn't had the shoe on for just a few days and it seems like the swelling is less then it usually is.... |
