At my stables I have a gelding who suffers from a mild form of Narcolepsy, over the past few days he has been discovered out of his stall and wondering around in the aisles! Could he be sleep walking?
(He is now "chained" in!)

Hello Sarah,
Why do you think this is not just regular walking?

He was described as wondering around 'punched drunk".

I don't know Sarah I have not seen or heard of horses "sleep walking". Does this horse lay down sometimes to sleep, recently there are reports that some horses that have trouble getting down don't sleep well and display some characteristics of narcoleptics but this is conjectural at this time.

OPI mild form of Narcolepsy is caused from sleep deprivation, he will lay down but not for long and does not get very good REM sleep. (I was given more information from the owner.) We have decided to change his feeding schedule times and see if that improves his sugar levels and give him a better chance for heavier REM. Thanks for the informative site, it is a lot help to me. (But I was wondering if horses could be like people and do things in sleep mode. I have a daughter who is like that- so she says)
