We were on the trail for about 40 minutes and while crossing the river the horse just went down in the river . the water was waist high and he would not get up he seemed to be sleeping. We got him over to the bank it was not an easy task .
He stayed asleep for 20 minutes with the rest of his body in the river. We were afraid of him getting to cold and getting hyperthermeia I had to cut his air supply off add beat him on the head and he finaly got up.We waited about 5 minutes he was fine we rode him back to camp about 5 miles . does this sound like it maybe Hypp?

HMMM doesn't sound like hypp, I think they usually act like they are tying up.

I have had horse (especially young ones) lay down in rivers some seem more prone to it hen others. This time of year sometimes my older horse who know better will try to roll with me on because they itch when sweaty and still have their winter hair.

Could this horse just been exausted, they do tend to over heat and be out of shape this time of year.

Well let's see, Dianne HYPP is a flaccid paralysis so really does not look like tying up and may be consistent with some of the signs Karen describes. Cindy, by definition, narcoleptic horses are "arousable" so the inability to get this horse to wake up does not fit well but still may be some sort of seizure activity.

Karen does your horse have the HYPP gene? If he does it should be on your list of possibilities. Your case swings a lot on the particulars:
Most important whether the horse was conscience or unconscious during the down period. If he was unconscience, did he loose consciousness and go down or did he go down and then loose consciousness? For more on the possibilities see Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Seizures & Fainting » Seizures and Epilepsy.
