I have a 7 yr old mare that makes a noise inhaling at the canter or going up hill. She has coughed at times, but not always. My vet listened to her heart, lungs and airway with a stethascope before and after lunging at the trot, as that was the only way we could do it at the time. He said he didn't hear anything at all and since he does not have a scope we tried dexamethezone in case it was an allergy. I gave her 5 mil twice a day in her feed for a week. There may have been some relief, but not enough to say it was an allergy. I then tried giving her SMZ's twice a day for a week in case there was some infection. No different. She is so quiet to ride that it is hard to tell if lack of air is effecting her performance. Any suggestions besides taking her to another vet for scoping? That doesn't always tell you the answer either, does it?

Not being able to hear the sound Mary, it is hard for me to make specific recommendations. However scopping is a logical next move when respiratory noise is heard during exercise. The biggest problem is if the noise is made only during exercise it may be hard to id the source with the horse still. No the procedure is not 100% but for this type problem is pretty good. DrO
