A few days ago I went out to ride my horse and low and behold he has a hard bump with very minor swelling on his back left leg (on what I think is called the cannon bone). He does not favor the leg at all and he does not care if I pick up his leg and squeeze the bump. It has been a hard bump since day 1 though I noticed after a couple days it got smaller. I was not sure if it was a splint or just a bump from kicking the rails for he tends to try to kick the one of the other horses in the pen next to him sometimes. I have never had to deal with splints or this kind of bump before and I wanted to know what it was first and when/if I can ride him? I did ride him a few days ago and he was fine but the next day the minor swelling was back but still no favoring of the leg. He was even trotting in his pen at dinner time. I attached a picture. Oh, and in the picture he is standing off because he was moving around eating otherwise he stands straighter. Thanks.

Hello BJ I really cannot make out the bump on my notebook screen. I will try again in my office this morning with a brighter screen and my reading glasses. You would have done better getting more light (turn the horse into the sun) and using light to create shadow from the bump to help us determine location and size. DrO

Here is another picture. I put an arrow pointing to where it is. Hopefully the picture is a bit better. It is a bit overcast weather today so I am not sure about the lighting. I don't think the leg is hot or anything. I tried comparing it to his other leg but I can't really tell if it is normal body heat or just a little hotter, not sure. I have been hosing it down just incase though.

Hello B.J., it is definitely a bump which might be a "splint", the location and appearance is right but it would take an examination to be sure. DrO

I just took some pictures today a few mins ago and now I am really confused. The bump seems much smaller (though it may or may not seem it in the picture) with no swelling and still does not seem to bother him but now the bump is really soft. It was hard like bone yesterday and for a whole week. This horse seems to get the weirdest injuries uck lol.

Nothing odd about this BJ this is a common site for injury and the nature of the body is to heal injury where it can. DrO
