Hi. My 8 year old paint gelding has horizontal hoof cracks just below the coronet band on both front feet. They are very thin and go all the way across the front of the hoof. Some history....we've been trying to grow out quarter cracks for almost a year. The farrier comes every 4 to 5 weeks and puts patches on. We are now trying a new "rubber" shoe on his front feet. The cracks seem to be growing out. He also said something about white line disease last time he was shod, due to having the patches on. Also, this horse suffers from spring hives, so he's been on every other day dex. for about 3 weeks. Today, I noticed the horizontal cracks on the two front hooves. Leo is still perfectly sound. But, the cracks don't look good and my trainer said she's never seen anything like it before. Any advice?

Kristen there are many diagnostic possibilities so proper treatment if needed will have to wait a diagnosis. If can you post images of the cracks, it might help us give better advice. In the meantime you may be able to figure this out by reading the subtopic on "Horizontal Wall Defects" in the article Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Wall Cracks and Thin Sensitive Soles. Try Hoofrite. you can get it online. I had a horse with a BAD Bleeding Quarter crack and it grew out very nicely in 10 months. also my farrier shod him with Pads and eggbar shoes on the two feet (front right inside Q Crack). till it grew down 1/2 an inch I didn't allow any thing but a walk but did ride to keep him in shape. - Just my experience - hope it helps

Opps sorry forgot to mention that the Farrier also trimmed the bottom of the hoof that had the crack up so as not to put pressure on the crack it'self. A good farrier is worth his or her weight in gold I say.

It really does not matter which supplement as long as it has as a minimum the recommended ingredients in the article I reference above, checking Hoofrite against that list...it does. DrO
