Hi
My 7 year old gelding has really sore itchy patches of skin on his face. It started as little bumps like fly bites which he rubbed raw and the patches spread. Last year it happened for the first time and the vet was baffled and prescribed antibiotics and 40 piriton tablets (20 am and 20pm) a day until healed saying it could be an allergic reaction to a bite or sting - this was in August. Now the same thing has happened in May again with absolutely no changes to routine, feed etc. The weather has been hot though. None of the other horses he is turned out with have had any rashes or symptoms. I have tried anti fungal cream twice a day and on a different week hyDrOcortisone cream(this seemed to help if applied on pimples before they were rubbed)and antibacterial powder and am now back to piriton and a zinc oxide nappy rash cream! I have attached a photo of his face if this is any help as me and my vet are baffled.Any ideas?

Jo the size of the images are too small for me to see anything I am afraid. If something more than one of the more common skin infections (see articles on Dermatophilus and Dermatophytosis in the irritated skin topic) is suspected bacterial and fungal cultures would be the best way to diagnose the problem and sensitivity of the culture will show you the best treatment.
