my horse is a 16yr 15.3 buckskin FQH, i have noticed that after Exercise and when VERY hot this Vein on the inside of LF ( it is inbetween the cannon and tendons) Distends, the harder the work the more enlarged it becomes, i chalked it up to increased blood flow to the legs and body. it always goes back to normal with rest and after he cools down. (when i get to the barn his legs are tight and normal) However i read that a Distended Medial palmar Vein (which i think this is) could mean a high suspensory injury, and also can show no signs of tenderness or swelling. this made me nervous. i also noticed the that the Opposite Diagonal RH has a enlarged vein also after work. When the medial Palmar Vein is Distended due to Suspensory injury, is it always enlarged even with rest? or does it go down with rest? what i am saying is: could this be just a normal thing? ,or him compensating for his hocks? (arthritis),or a high suspensory tear.?? he has pedal osteitis (but that has been taken care of for more than 2 yrs and he is not responsive to hoof testers) THANK YOU KINDLY

Hello Joanne, Suspensory injury is first suspected by the presence of lameness. Distended veins following exercise is pretty normal. DrO

Thank You, that eases my mind. i still wish i remember if it was there before or not :P i guess when you start checking your horse's legs and "looking for a problem and are worried about it, you notice things that you never noticed before and start to think there is problem when in reality it is completely normal. at least i hope that is the case Thank You Kindly!
