There are only a few other horses on out small island and no vets, farriers, etc. (I am a military spouse, it is japanese owned) I give lessons to military families stationed here. Anyways! I have 12 horses to take care of and one that seems pretty critical. About 6 months ago they had thought about putting him down.I will give a little history on him. This is all information by word of mouth (i was not in okinawa yet when it started) A gelding named Brian had been noticed to have what looked like cauliflower type growing in his hoof, they said they treated it with 10% bleach water in standing boots, and maybe some other remedies and it went away. He now has the bad smell and very soft frogs and soles. I am guessing that it is thrush. I can scrape some of the softness away, but only til i notice it bleed. The old manager (who left 3 months ago) always told everyone to keep him out of his stall, and that it was better for him. Our footing is all sand and wet. The Japanese ride him even though he is lame and soft feet. We have no resources for shoeing, (dont know if that would help) I have spoke with the japanese instructor about not riding him. They look at horses as working animals, so it is hard to keep them off of him. So, after my long story.. here are my questions: They have small stalls, small amount of bedding, could he wear a type of boot on his feet? Is there a boot he could wear while being ridden? (that would be able to keep it dry?) And will it heal if he is being ridden? i have purchased Thrushbuster and put it on twice a week, and cut back softness when able too. What can I do to help this poor horse??? Thanks all for any help! |

However the description of "cauliflower like" gives canker a nod. Study the descriptions so you can properly diagnose and treat. In the case of canker you are probably going to need professional help. There are many boots that can be used to protect the feet during riding and members have reviewed their preferences here, Horse Care » Hoof Care, Hoof Trimming, Shoeing Horses » Hoof Care Topics Not Covered Above » Hoof Boots.
