Dear Dr. O, My friend's horse was rubbing his tail so badly (open sores) that she ended up calling the vet out. Vet said the horse is allergic to bug bites and put him on dexamethasone (steroid) to get him past the itching and wants the open sores treated with Panalog. He first responded well to the treatment, but a week after he started scratching again and still deep pus pockets develop on his tail where it looks like the entire follicle is infected and comes out, leaving holes in his tail dock. I attached some pictures for you to see. The horse is now covered from head to toe in fly sheets, mask, etc. We have a real tick problem this year and other horses had issues, but nothing like this. He hasn't had one attached in a while now (at least not that we saw), but the infections keep on coming. Questions: Is there anything else that can be done? Will the hair grow back out of those deep holes? Can this be triggered by the ticks only (vs. bug bits in general)? Thank you very much in advance.

Hello Delia, The hair can grow back and yes ticks in the tail alone can cause such reactions. As to the specific questions of what more your friend can do Delia, we avoid such third party discussions for a number of reasons. Certainly you are welcome to review the article and other discussions on these questions as their are many other recommendations in these already published materials and share it with your friend.
