I am considering adopting a 2yo TB that, according to the adoption agency, had extra bone growth on his ankles. See writeup below:

"He was broke over the winter and spent several months at the racetrack in training this spring. He was born with extra bone on his ankles (as can be seen in the photo). When he was asked to work harder in preparation for his first race his ankles became sore. With just a short amount of time off he looks and feels great. We feel he just needs time to grow and mature. Magic has a great mind especially for his age. He is naturally calm and thinks through everything you ask of him. He is riding sound and once of jumping age should make a nice lower level hunter/jumper. He has a nice long stride however, he is still very growthy and learning to balance himself."

I am curious as to what this type of problem may lead to, if anything, or if allowing this baby to grow up without any work may allow it to take care of itself.

Any guidance or thoughts are appreciated.

The main concern is arthritis in the ankle joints Terri. I would have radiographs done to check to see if there is any sign. Even clean radiographs however do not rule out the possibility this horse may be a bit predisposed as there is some indication of past stress to these ankles.
