Well, many members of my herd are "vacationing" for the summer at my parents farm... a lovely place, just not with my "normal" level of veterinary and farrier support... And, today a new young farrier came out to trim... for my 5 yo appy gelding (who is in his 4th month of the recommended 6 - 12 months off work due to his incredibly horrible severe osteoarthritis of both hocks, which are in the process of autofusing...) he said, "looks like he has white line disease"... Now, this is a fairly YOUNG farrier with limited experience, but he did point out that something appears to be disrupting this gelding's hoof wall... for me, it was rather difficult to appreciate... so, I have now read Dr. O's article and I will get some pictures to share, but here's my question: Is topical treatment really the only method?... if this is a fungal infection, is there any reason to think that systemic anti-fungal agents are of benefit???

Thanks!

The problem with systemic anti-fungals Martha is they are largely untested, fairly expensive to use, and require a long time treatment because it has to get integrated into the dead horn.
