I appologize, but a rescue is trying to make decisions regarding this horse in a meeting on Sunday.

He is a 3yo and the x-rays were taken 60 days ago. He's been on stall rest in 10x10 w/no walking or leaving the stall since then. I'm providing stall space for them and they're trying to determine his prognosis for return to any sort of work with or without surgery. Any advice or opinion would be appreciated. They're also trying to get opinions from a vet, but I wasn't able to get the x-rays until late today (Friday).

Here is a page with full sized images on them: https://www.usho.org/RAffair.html

Hello kbrooks,
Not being a track vet I do not get to look at many of these from this end. I see them years after once arthritis has developed. So I will tip my hat on this to those with more experience. But I would opine that without surgery a fracture displaced that much has a guarded long term prognosis for any athletic endeavor. With surgery on a recent fracture I would say good however it has been there long enough to see the beginnings of signs of osteoarthritis (osteophytes) decreasing chances of full soundness.

Thanks for taking the time to look at them. I forwarded your comments to the BOD. The track vet also said w/out surgery the horse would never be sound, but wasn't willing to give prognosis w/surgery. The x-ray was approx 3 week after the race where he was hurt. Its amazing to think that osteoarthritis can set in so quickly.
