Three weeks ago my 2 year old Missouri Fox Trotter arrived from Missouri. She survived a 48-hour haul from the US to Canada. About 10 days after her arrival I noted significant swelling under her neck and between her two jaw bones. My first thought was she had contracted Strangles (also known as Shipping Fever). I consulted my vet (by phone) who told me to keep an eye on her, but that's likely what it was (and recommended no treatment). Two days later, a friend of mine came to see her, and she has seen several cases. When we went to look at her, the swelling was pretty much all gone! We noticed a pretty good sized bite on the side of her neck (horse flies are nasty right now) and I'm wondering if a bite like that could have caused such swelling, or if not, what else it could have been. She is now 100%. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hello Pam, Non-specific swelling of the submandibular lymph nodes is very common in the horse. While a single fly bite is not likely to be the cause the history suggests contact with some milder form of upper respiratory disease, either on the haul or something endemic in your population, is likely. I am leaning more towards the haul, Dr. O and the stress she incurred from it. We just have one other (healthy) gelding in our herd and he hasn't been exposed to any other horses since May. It was a long haul for her, and given her age it was bound to have some sort of affect on her. Not to mention, she was on board with 5 other horses. It was an extremely well built rig with each horse having their own "space" but they all came from different places so who knows what 'germs' were floating around in there for 48 hours! I am pleased to say that since her arrival 3 weeks ago she has gained about 50 lbs (I think she lost that much during the trip) and is happy and healthy.
