I sold one of my yearlings two weeks ago. She had no lameness or tenderness and they saw her several times. Yesterday he called me and told me she has "epiphysitis" per his vet. She presented lame. His vet used this term and diagnosed her based on the appearance of her knees. He said they were "cone" shaped. She was not overweight, a bit ribby, had been on one flake of grass/alfalfa, a vitamin mineral supplement and pasture. I've read your article and if his diagnosis is correct, I'm concerned about my other yearlings. They are in heavier condition, but not obese. All are quarter horses, born April and May 2007. I will post pictures:

I have read the article and it seems the vet may not be up to speed on this as he insisted no more alfalfa, no supplements. Just pasture. He used the term "epiphysitis". Of course my question is how do the knees look on the above two and what did he mean by "cone" shaped. My horses and my neighbors horses all have sort of "cone" shaped knees as opposed to "square" which the vet said they should have. I did suggest he watch the filly he bought carefully, as perhaps the diagnosis was "hurried"--the vet only spent about 15 minutes with her.

Hello Julie, I don't see anything wrong with the images and as you say, "if the diagnosis is correct". The article explains more about this. If you are concerned review the articles on nutrition of growing foals and if you have it pegged and everyone is fit and healthy quit worrying. DrO

Thanks DrO. I will quit worrying about that particular issue. I bet you pound that keyboard with more force than necessary calming all the imagined fears some of us come up with. As you know, some of us just can't seem to have horses in our lives and not worry! I know there are people like that--I see there healthy horses standing in barb wire fenced pastures, grass up to their bellies, old farm equipment strewn about along with the remains of a fallen barn. My bet is most of them aren't on these forums!
