Discussion on Swelling of the sheath | |

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008 - 5:46 pm: For years now we have had problems with our gelding's penus & sheath. My last post was 20 months ago on 'Discussion on Penile cancer. - Dec. 2006.' Since then it has been more or less under control with regular attention. Now it has once again gone out of control. It has never been as bad.... The mushroom like growths on the penus have multiplied. The penus is too swollen to be DrOpped. So he urinates in a splash - without DrOpping. It has not DrOpped for many months. Now his sheath is swollen. Very swollen and has been so for most of the month. We have injected him with anti-inflammatories, which have done very little difference. Penicillin, which has left him with a very stiff neck & off his food. He has obviously been in great discomfort. The swelling did improve a little but not for long. We have now stopped with the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory due to the various side effects. We only clean daily with a disenfectant soap, rinse with a light betadine douche & jectamycine. The swollen areas also get massaged with Mammyl. Earlier this week we ran a complete blood picture with very good results. But the swelling is no better. The swelling is spreading up his belly with a mass of swelling between his front legs. Today he is unsound on his back legs. He is eating reasonably well but very obviously uncomfortable. We do not have a horse clinic so all treatment is done in the stables here. For this reason the vet is not happy doing a biopsy. He thinks the edima is caused by the excessively swollen penus. Have any of you any experience on anything similar? Is it possible, through sedation, to bring down the penus manually to relieve the pressure on the inner part of the sheath? I think it is too swollen for him to draw it back up again naturally. Obviously I am really concerned and would appreciate any suggestions. |

Our vet wouldn't even like to do a biopsy under these conditions due to the possibility of heavy bleeding. |
