My gelding came up lame on right front and the trainer suspected possible abscess or bruise as we just returned from show with a hard ground, gravely arena. He soaked and packed. 3 days later not much better. I went out to see and he was thinking the lameness seemed more in the coffin bone area since the treatment did not bring any abscesses to a head. I asked for the shoe to come off to see if that would help. The horse had immediate painful reaction in one area of the shoe. When pulled the trainer did not find any area that seemed like an abscess nor did any pus.. come out. He packed the foot with Ick and wrapped it. I asked for the farrier to come out and see if he can dig anything out. Is this the correct direction? Seems like from reading the articles I should have had the farrier come and try to pare out immediately. Since we got such a reaction from the horse is it safe to say that it is more likely an abscess? Carol

Hello Carol, There still is no firm diagnosis so we cannot really comment on appropriate treatment. The article describes many of the historical and clinical characteristics of a abscess but it takes locating it and draining to confirm the diagnosis. It is a twofer: you get puss and you get the diagnosis and treatment at the same time. If the farrier does not succeed at fixing a foot problem I would call out the veterinarian. DrO
