This morning I found my 12yo SSH laying down in the pasture. I could see that she was trying to get up but couldn't. She could get her front end up into a sitting position but couldn't get her back legs under her. She would then lay flat on her side and stick her right rear leg straight out. Her color was good, she wasn't in any apparent pain and I palpated her all over trying to locate the problem but couldn't. I took my daughter to school and was gone about 30 minutes, when I arrived home she was up and at the barn waiting for me. Again, I inspected this horse with a fine toothed comb and found a small spot on her left rear foot. It is low, near the bottom of the hoof, and is pinkish colored but when I lifted her left rear leg to look at her foot and nothing appears to be wrong other than she was stiff and I had to bend her leg for her. Still no indication of pain. I led her in the barn and she walked on it, gingerly, but walked and put weight on it. She rested it in the crossties but when walked again she put weight on it again. I went ahead and gave her some Bute and am keeping her up in a in/out paddock. Does this sound like a Stifle issue or a bruised foot? Any help is appreciated!

Hello, Welcome to HA. No way for me to guess, but I might read the article on seizures and see if it fits what you saw. The only horses I have owned with trouble rising either had major lameness or neurological problems. Not sure if that is useful, but good luck. Let's hope it never recurs...

got home this afternoon and her ankle was swollen. Still not sure what happened but at least there is some evidence of what could be wrong.

Hello WF, The scene remains a little confusing. The lack of overt lameness or weakness suggest your horse was cast in the pasture. The swelling and stiffness could be from the difficulty getting up though this will take a exam to determine. It is amazing sometime how little it can take to cast a horse: a small hill or depression. DrO

I would also check carefully for a small puncture wound on that ankle. Tough to see sometimes, but just in case.... Erika
