My horse had a mild episode of grass laminitis a year ago September. I pulled him off pasture as soon as I noticed problems and he came sound again within 3 weeks. Fast forward to this year....my horse became foot sore after we were chased down a gravel road by a large dog. I suspected bruising, and asked the farrier (new farrier) to check his feet for me, and I also told him about my gelding's previous episode of laminitis. He said that my horse currently had a tight white line and therefore had never had laminitis EVER, because he can tell, regardless of how much time has passed. It was my understanding that if the laminitic episode is mild, and there is no rotation, that once the hoof grows out in 9 mths to a year there would not necessarily be evidence of past laminitis and that it is possible to grow out a tight white line in a previously laminitc foot. Who is correct here??? This farrier's opinion does not jive with everything I've read about mild episodes of laminitis.

I'd have to agree with you Karen, but I'm no expert.. I think even with rotation you can get rid of all signs of rotation if the hoof is properly trimmed while growing out and you don't have another bout of laminitis.

Will have to see what Dr. O says about this but I am inclined to agree with you.

There are many horses with histories of mild laminitis episodes that after the rings grow out have no "permanent mark" of founder. This may be semantics however, some use the term founder for mild laminitis and reserve laminitis for those horses with rotation. DrO
