I have a ten year old mare that has had three foals. Two years ago I was unable to get her in foal. Last year she checked in foal at 30 days but absorbed at some point before 100 days. This year she checked in foal at 30 days again. Her progestron level was at .2 so she was put on regumate at the breeding farm. She was on regumate for 90 days. I checked her at 7 months and she is not in foal.

Are there any diagnostic tests that would help me decide whether to attempt to breed the mare any more? Breeding fees (without the stud fee) have averaged about $2,500 for each of the past three years. Am I just throwing good money after bad?

Hello Scott,
The article on abortion has a description of the possibilities and gives a list of diagnostic tests to help determine the prognosis for further breeding. As many of the same problems that cause a mare to loose a foal early are also related to difficulties of getting mares pregnant you can learn more about these tests in the section on failure to get mares pregnant.
