I've written in to this discussion previously about my mare and her problems with her hind legs which we suspect might be shivers. Yesterday morning I found her in the pasture 3 legged lame and actually sometime she is only standing on two legs (the contra lateral front and back)b/c of her problem in the two back legs. I found heat and considerable swelling in the location of the SDFT (lower third) and she can hardly put weight on it. I wrapped a bag of frozen peas around it for a couple of hours and gave her 2g of bute. I called the vet and he recommended sweating it with DMSO which I did also adding 4mg of Dexamethasone to the solvent. She has also been stall rested. This mare has been retired for years so i have no idea how this happened, but I guess my question is how hard is this going to be for her to recover considering her age and the fact that she is uncomfortable on 3 of 4 feet. Although she is a trakehner and I guess if they can survive the trek than they can survive anyhting. I hope.

Hello AngelaS, Without knowing why your horse is lame we could only guess at the prognosis. The most common reason I see swelling in the lower leg and a really bad 3 legged lameness is a foot abscess, at a rate of probably 5 to 1 to every other cause of lameness that presents this way. So the first step is if this does not respond rapidly to your ministrations you should consider getting the veterinarian out. If it does turn out to be flexor tendonitis you will find a discussion on diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in the article associated with this discussion area. DrO
