I have been lurking around this forum off and on and now I have a question! I have noticed these bumps on my 3 yr old gelding. I am calling my vet on Mon morning to talk to her so the vet will be involved. But wanted to show these to you members and see if I am right about thinking they are an Sarcoid. He has one on each side, which to me is weird. They don't feel hard, they feel like just part of the skin. But I really don't know nothing about them! Any info would be great. Thank you for looking.

Imo, that's a weird location for a sarcoid, but guess they can form anywhere. Also, I've usually found them on grays, and they've been flatter and hard, like a firm bump. From the pictures, these look like they grow out/hang down a little?

That is what I was thinking but again I don't know nothing about sarcoids. I have no idea what they are and that there is one on each side. Thanks for looking!

Lol, now that it has been said they do look like nipples!! How funny! I have never noticed them before. I noticed them a couple of weeks ago and have been just keeping an eye on them. In case they get larger or??

Paintmom - my gelding had a sarcoid on his sheath about 3 or 4 years ago. It did not look like this, more flat, and it was further from the opening. The vet biopsied and confirmed that it was a sarcoid. We were just going to watch it carefully and remove it if it got bigger, but, without treatment it resolved itself. Not sure what was going on there, but I was happy about the outcome. Good luck, Lilo

All of your reply's are greatly appreciated! Guess I will have to have the vet look at them and see what she says! Lilo-I am happy that your outcome on your gelding turned out the way it did! Leslie-Yes it is on the outside of his sheath area! Thanks all!

Occasionally you do see such structures on the sheath of male horses and yes I have always thought some sort of rudimentary nipple. Unfortunately the detail in the above photos in not enough for me to rule out other possibilities. Does it feel like normal skin and is there hair loss over them? DrO

Thank you DrO for replying. Yes, it does feel like normal skin and there is no hair loss on them. Do you need an different picture of them or one that is closer to see more detail?

Interesting. I have a paint gelding who hangs down in a similar fashion on both sides as this shows, although I don't believe that it is quite as pronounced. Because it is so uniformly located, it does not seem likely to me that it would be sarcoids but rather something anatomical, though this is a favorite area for bugs to bite and that can cause a type of sarcoid. I am going to examine my paint horse carefully this evening to compare his situation to your photo!

I think a larger image would help if it is in good focus. DrO

I checked my paint boy this morning and he has the same type of thing. The shape is visible and can be felt on both sides. These are not appendages but a part of his sheath and the way that it is shaped. It is reminiscent of some types of leaves, especially those that live in a rain forest type of environment and have a shape that serves to more efficiently drain moisture off their surfaces. In my guy, the prominence of this has varied over the years depending upon condition and weight. I think that it is a normal thing in some horses.

Thank you Vicki for getting back on this. Is there any way you can get pictures of your guy and show me? If not that is ok, just thought it would help me if I could see it on another horse! LoL Maybe not worry so much about it!

I need to try to take and post some of my gray Arabian who has been having some unusual circumstances described under a separate post today. When and if I can get to that, I will also try to take and post some of my Buddy's (paint horse) sheath.
