Posted on Wednesday, Nov 5, 2008 - 8:25 pm: I have a 9 year old mare that has been on pasture layoff for about a month. I have recently noticed a significant amount of edema under her belly on both sides of her midline. It is about 12 inches long and an inch thick. Right down the center of her midline there is no swelling. She is definitely not pregnant and does not appear to have noticeable swelling anywhere else (although she is quite furry right now). When she was in work I had always noticed thick patches in these same areas but it was not enough to be concerned about. Is there anything I should be checking with her? I just want to make sure that this is not a symptom of any thing that needs attention. I did look at the article about swellings and did not find anything that fit her description. Thanks Shelley |

The point of the article on swelling was not so much to be able to "match up a swelling" though that is discussed. The point of the article is that there are several different types of swelling and explains how to differentiate these different types, and from there a stab at cause can be made. Study the article with this in mind and see if you can tell us what type swelling you have then we might be able to help with cause. DrO |

Posted on Monday, Dec 22, 2008 - 6:00 pm: My 4 year old mare developed bilobed ventral midline edema 4 days ago. Temperature is normal and feeding behavior normal. Her belly is sensitive to touch. The bulge has moved from teats toward chest. Vet check did not seem to indicate Pigeon Fever. Vet drew blood to test protein. Any other ideas? Both my vet and I are at a loss here. |
