Discussion on Organic Iodide - am I imagining things?? Does it really work, how come?

Okay, before I go nuts, I figured I'd ask here.

My horse has SPAOD, which seems to linger even past the summer into just IAD.

In the past I have been succesfull helping him out with Sputolysin (Dembrexine). It would clear the mucus and he'd be breathing much better. Ventipulmin by itself never did as great a job as Sputolysin. Sadly,it's not available in the US.

- First question, if anyone knows: "Is it legal or is it not legal to have Sputolysin in the house? It's not on the FDA-list :-(. I can bring it back from the Netherlands upon my next visit, but not sure if that's wise or not. It's an OTC medication in Europe.

- Second question, other then Dembrexine, which other equine mucolytic is out there? I know of Ventipulmin, but on it's own did not work as great as Dembrexine.

- And thirdly can someone please tell me I'm not going nuts. My vet gave me some organic iodide powder by Neogen. I have tried & tested this during 3 episodes and I swear my horse seems MUCH better. Dry nostrils after riding, no discharge other then perhaps a clear tiny drip, no more pouring milkyway and he's definitely more comfortable breathing when asked to canter for prolonged periods.
I've searched the internet, but can't seem to find a link between organic iodide and respiratory problems???
I can hardly be imagining this, as it's so obvious (no discharge within 1 week) or should I look for other things that may make this a more coincidental finding.

Thank you Dr O & others for any thoughts on this.
Regards. Patsy

(PS, I'd rather stay clear of Prednisolone, had an episode of laminitis like symptoms. I have used Fluticasone in the past, but at $185 every 5 days, it's rather expensive. I do the management treatment as much as pos for him)

Hello PatsyB
1) I don't know if this is legal or not but if you contact your state veterinarian's office they should be able to find the answer.
2) Guaifenesin is considered a mucolytic in humans that is available in this country and has common uses in equine anesthesia. However I do not have a mucolytic dosage and it is very foul tasting so may be difficult to give.
3) If you feel you are getting such a response I would certainly keep trying though I do not know the nature of improvement unless there is some infectious aspect the iodine is effecting.
