I just adopted an off the track thoroughbred, Lane is an 8 y/o gelding. I was told that he had a bow on his left front and that it was about 3 months old and due to a race injury. The volunteers at the track (I was not there) said he trotted sound after palpating and it was cold. I asked if he was still being wrapped and they said no. I assumed that he had been wrapped and cared for initially... never assume anything. He needed a home and I agreed to take him. When he got off the trailer I noticed a VERY pronounced low bow and he was a little off due to the 4 1/2 hour trailer ride. The person that trailered him felt he had never been wrapped. I put him in a stall with a dmso/furzone sweet and standing wraps. I changed the wraps this morning with not much difference. I have read the article, but I am not sure wether to proceed as if it was a new injury? He is sound, just puffy... should I proceed differently as it is about 3 months old and no longer hot? Also I will call the track tomorrow to try and figure out the date of the injury and see if I can talk to the track vet so I know what diagnostics were done so I dont repeat testing. Any thoughts?

Hello Zoe, The first step to proper treatment here is a new or very recent ultrasound detailing the stage of the healing. You can look at a dozen very similar acute tendon bows and they you will find some that heal significantly slower than others. Once the lesions present are well defined and stage of healing understood you can then fit it into the Rehab Protocol. Having the results of earlier exams will give you an idea of how fast things are progressing. DrO
