Posted on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 - 10:14 pm: My 11 year old Gypsy Vanner Broodmare has successfully and uneventfully had 5 foals previous to my purchasing her. Her last was weaned just before I received her and all had gone well. She came to me in foal and somewhere in the first couple of months reabsorbed that foal. She was successfully bred by AI this summer and again lost the foal at about 6 weeks. biopsy showed Kenny 2b an infection, and signs of Pheumo vagina. Do I have a reasonable chance of a successful foal or am I throwing away money. |

On the other hand two years of no success is not encouraging. At least you have a handle on part of the problem and can address these issues and that should help. DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 - 6:24 pm: Dr. O, Thank you for your reply. The first loss was following a transfer from California to Montana just last summer, which was long and I am sure stressful and her 3 month old filly ( weaned for at least 3 weeks) was beside her in the trailer ( headed to a different destination) During the transport the filly started nursing again and I always wondered if that did not play havoc with her hormonally not to mention stress. Anyway she probably went months after losing it and when we did not see signs of progressing preg. we had her ultrasounded and found no foal but a pretty good uterine infection. It was early enough ( Early June) to proceed with A.I . so after treated the uterine infection and getting clear swab we used hormone shots to bring her into estus and she impregnated first try. That preg was confirmed for 8 weeks and then we checked again at 18 weeks and it was gone. That is when an endometrial biopsy was sent in. This all happened this summer and fall. Again there was found to be an infection. So at least so far we only lost the one season of foaling. The plan is to clear up infection...( she has already begun treatment) and then perform a caslick procedure. We will try A.I. as early in the spring as is prudent for our weather and hope for the best. I just worry that we are throwing more money at an already biggggg loss. She is a Gypsy Vanner Mare and we paid quite a bit to have her as a Broodmare. The other thing I am doing is really working on her nutrition and physical conditioning and training. Maybe it is the nurse in me but it seems like it can't hurt for her to be in a better place stress wise ( she is a spooky ol girl) and fitness wise. The other thing is Regumate. Would that increase chances in a scenario such as this ??? Thank you all so much and I would REALLY LOVE to hear any tips from you horse breeders. I know I am green and have a lot to learn.
