My horse Tucker is an 18 y/o thoroughbred. He has been having trouble getting up since June after laying down or rolling. To make a long story short, after an x-ray and 2 ultrasounds at the vet's, they determined the medial meniscus of his left stifle had completely been pushed out and the right hind meniscus was partially pushed out. The vet did not recommend injections since the joint space had decreased, only bute therapy. Tucker has been on bute therapy (2 grams a day), cosequin asu and surpass. Is there anything else we can do? He still is having trouble getting up and it is so heartbreaking to watch and go through. We will do anything for him, just so he can get up after laying down or rolling and live a comfortable, happy life. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Welcome Danielle, Such injuries are going to result in life long lameness that will prevent riding. We recommend you forward the findings of your exams to a equine orthopedic surgeon to get an evaluation of what might be possible. It may be possible that by surgically correcting some of the displacements or removal of torn fragments that the horse can live out his life more comfortably. DrO
