Posted on Friday, Nov 21, 2008 - 4:26 pm: Dr.O. the horses are out in the pasture with the creek in it now. They don't normally cross the creek because it is scary! Yesterday they decided to get brave and go to the other side where the grass is more plentiful. when coming down the road from work I saw them there having a bucking, rearing, we're scared fit. (the wind was blowing 50mph out of the north) adding to the craziness.Normally the old mare won't go across because she don't like to get her feet wet. So when she does cross she jumps a 3-4 foot bank. They were so wound up they took off running and lept across the creek... including Flash (I could only cringe) she jumped very well tho and galloped up the hill like a race horse, just amazing what a little adrenaline can do. Last night and this morning she looked fine. I came home at noon today and they were all across the creek again calmly grazing. Tonight when I got home they were back over across the creek and the 2 boys were grazing, but the old girl was looking rather uncomfortable. Switching her weight and pawing...this is the way she acts when her arthritis is really acting up. I went out and offered her a carrot to make sure she wasn't colicing and she readily accepted it and everything looked fine otherwise. I'm going to bute her tonight and not let her out in THAT pasture again, as I'm SURE she jumped the creek again. Should I confine her until she seems better, or is it better to let her move about the pasture? I don't quite understand from the article which is best for something like this. Thanks |

I would give bute for the next few days.. you might have to give her bute thru the winter.. my gelding does great on just 1/2 gram a bute a day.. 'just got to love these beasts.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.. |

See Dr.O. I do read the articles...just don't interpret them well! I guess that would include her foolishness even though it was self inflicted I decided to play it safe and will check her over in the morning. I suppose if she is better she can go back out? |
