We have a thoroughbred stallion in Australia which is semi infertile and it is very valuable, he stands at $20,000 a cover. In his first season he covered 80 mares got 60 in foal. next season, got 8 out of 10 and then missed the next 60. this year he is shooting at 30%. He has only one healthy working testicle the other one didn't develop and is still up inside him, i forget the term they use for it. Is there an expert who could help us out with this big problem seeing his is a very valuable horse. Thankyou.

Welcome Sam, Having one testicle, a cryptorchid, by itself should not effect his fertility with natural covers or with shipped semen as long as the proper number of healthy sperm are shipped. Of course you should expect to be able to get fewer good aliquots for shipment. A good history, general physical exam with a emphasis on the reproductive organs which would include a CBD and serum chemistries, and lastly a semen evaluation would be your first step. For more on this see the article associated with this discussion area, Stallion Fertility. Has the stallion in question have a family history of cryptorchids or have they been reported in any of his foals? Of course the concern is whether this is heritable but there are many reports where this does not seem to be the case. DrO
