We took our 10 YO gelding for a horse for trail ride on Sunday, and at end of the ride (1 hour) he had a large 2 inch swollen bump on his back behind the saddle- we suspect a spider bite, as it was woods and the saddle blanket had been on the ground before we tacked up; this is 48 hours later and still the same size; there is no heat, no itch, horse is fine. bump is soft, probably filled with fluid; how long to wait before we call the vet; we don't want to have this aspirated unless necessary because then we would have the puncture wound to deal with.Th saddle we have been using for a year with no issue, it is custom fitted ortho-flex western; how long to wait to get swelling down? Is there anything we can do. here is a picture; he was in the rain today so area is not as visible.

Hello Patricia,
A spider bite at the end of Nov in NJ? Spiders have long been gone here in NC because of the cold. If I localize the shot correctly this is a bit back for a saddle problem. The area would be consistent with a sacroiliac subluxation, a hunter bump so to speak, and the description consistent with acute inflammatory swelling. So a acute si subluxation or blunt trauma to the area could cause such a swelling.

Since we cannot examine the area and really only know what you have told us about this, so we too don't really know what is going on. You should call the veterinarian whenever you do not understand what is going on and you think it may be serious.

update Dec 1: Quite possible that it is a trauma injury; maybe the other horse kicked him prior to us riding him that day- they play rough; the swelling has gone down a bit, but not fully; he seems fine but we are not riding him; he rolls over, runs around and kicks up playing. Our vet comes next week for shots and will look this injury over
